Daniel Alfredsson will not play tonight; he's out with a back injury.

Mike Babcock said Alfie "needed another day"
and Joakim Andersson will take his place.

"Right now, and when I first heard about it, it’s just exciting...Just play my game, so be smart in all three zones and get some pucks to the net, be good on the penalty kill, be good in the lanes and be in front of the net when the puck gets there."
- Joakim Andersson

Andersson will likely play alongside Helm and Jurco, but Mike Babcock said that may change throughout the course of the game.

The rest of the lines are expected to stay the same.

Start Fast - The crowd will be fired up. Use that energy and take it to the Bruins early.

Howard is Key - He needs to be better than Rask. Make the big saves all game.

Power Play Needs to Show Power - It starts with the breakout. Establish pressure in the offensive zone. Get second and third chances. One and done won't work.

On April 22,

1950: Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay each scored twice in Game 6 of Stanley Cup finals helping Red Wings to 5-4 win over the Rangers. New York had a 2-0 and 3-1 lead, but failed to hold on as Wings came back to force Game 7.

1992: The Wings cut their series deficit to 2-1 against Minnesota when Yves Racine scores at 1:15 of overtime in Game 3.

The Red Wings accomplished what they wanted. The Eastern Conference's second wild card earned a split on the road to open this first-round series against the Boston Bruins, the Presidents' Trophy winners. The Red Wings were unable to hold down the Bruins for two straight games, as Boston bounced back from a shutout loss in Game 1 with a 4-1 win in Game 2. The two games couldn't have been more different in terms of the team that set the tone throughout, and that will be a focal point again in pivotal Game 3.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock liked his team's start in Game 2, but he was disappointed with how the Red Wings played over the last two periods. Most of all, he was frustrated with how his players allowed the Bruins to distract them from the game during post-whistle scrums. Goaltender Jimmy Howard was also disenchanted with his teammates' decision-making in that realm.

"I think we got to stay out of the [nonsense] out there and just play whistle to whistle, and not worry about getting into the scrums or anything like that and proving your manhood out there," Howard said. "Just skate, play our hockey, don't get into their [mode] and get into their scraps playing real physical. Just get back to playing our game."

In addition to staying away from the extracurricular activities, the Red Wings will need to get star forward Pavel Datsyuk free from the matchup with Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara. Being on home ice should make that easier for Detroit with the second change.

Welcome to the Detroit Red Wings Game Day Blog, where you can get behind-the-scenes information, thoughts from players and staff, and up-to-date news on anything and everything Red Wings on game day.

You can watch tonight's 7:30 PM matchup on Fox Sports Detroit or NBCSN, or listen in with Ken Kal and Paul Woods on 97.1 The Ticket.
