Detroit is still hampered by a glut of injuries. Three lineup regulars are on injured reserve and several others are dealing with issues that keep them questionable from game to game. Detroit called up rookie defenseman Alexey Marchenko for the start of a four-game road trip because Danny DeKeyser is battling a groin issue.

In their most recent game, the Red Wings dropped a 3-2 game in a shootout against the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of more than 105,000 snow-covered fans at the 2014 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic, held New Year's Day at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Red Wings fell to 1-7 in shootouts this season and have lost 12 of their past 13 shootouts when including last season's results.

"I was really mad," forward Tomas Tatar, who lost the puck off his stick during his attempt, told MLive.com's Ansar Khan. "Maybe I should have tried something simpler instead of trying to stick-handle. Maybe I should have gone down and shot it, but that's not my style. I like to stick-handle a bit."

Tonight, the Wings will look to get back on the right track in Dallas.

Need High Compete Level - Win the battles for the puck in both ends of the ice.

Solid Goalkeeping - Jimmy Howard needs to bounce back after the Nashville game. He'll need to play well and make timely saves.

Top Players Must Perform - Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are back together again. They'll need to play strong today and go get a win for Detroit.

Detroit's 6-4 win over Chicago in the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field marked the 879th time that Wings defenseman Chris Chelios played on the winning team in a regular-season game, tying the NHL record held by Scott Stevens.

Each team is scuffling and desperate for points in the first game of the new year. Each has 45 points and sits in a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic Division as they pass the midway point of the season.

So, despite all the pomp and circumstance that will accompany the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, this game is most importantly about the standings points in play, a topic referenced over and over by the coaching staff of each team.

Yet there is no denying the game will be a spectacle of epic proportions, featuring a potential record-setting crowd, near-perfect conditions (temperatures expected in the teens with light snow), and bold-faced entertainment offerings all presented in front of national TV audiences in the United States and Canada. That is a point Detroit coach Mike Babcock stressed to his players after practice at Michigan Stadium on Tuesday.

"You don't remember everything in life, but you remember moments," Babcock said. "This should be one of those moments you remember."
