Both teams try to finish their pre-Christmas schedule on a positive note. The Red Wings, who've won their past two, are playing their last game in Detroit before the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The specter of an 11-game winless streak in shootouts was hanging over the Red Wings like Marley's ghost until Saturday night. After a back-and-forth game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre, the Red Wings got the extra point when Pavel Datsyuk and Daniel Alfredsson scored in the tiebreaker.

"It's huge," Alfredsson said when asked about ending the shootout drought. "It becomes a mental thing. Winning in overtimeagainst Calgary Thursday and then winning in a shootout I think lessens the grip on the stick the next time around."

Tonight, the Wings will look to keep rolling when the reeling New York Islanders visit Hockeytown.

Welcome to the Detroit Red Wings Game Day Blog, where you can get behind-the-scenes information, thoughts from players and staff, and up-to-date news on anything and everything Red Wings on game day.

You can watch tonight's 7:30 PM matchup on Fox Sports Detroit-Plus, or listen in with Ken Kal and Paul Woods on AM 1270.

Daniel Alfredsson has been red hot this season. Not only is he third on the team with 27 points, but he's coming off his best game of the season, scoring twice and recording an assist in a 3-2 win over Calgary just last game.

He's Detroit's 'Hot Wing' by Buffalo Wild Wings!
