Detroit Red Wings Playoff Game Day Blog

Do you remember Game 6 of last year’s playoff series against San Jose?

Do you remember how loud it was? How 20,000 people sung ‘Journey’ together? How our club fed off of that energy en route to victory?

That’s what home ice advantage is all about. It’s all about you, our seventh man, creating an atmosphere at Joe Louis Arena that gives our team an edge.

“It’s going to be fun to play in front of the home crowd,” Johan Franzen said of today’s game. “It’s so much energy, so much help for us on the ice. The fans are usually good for an extra chance or two out there, even if they don’t play.”

The Red Wings did exactly what they wanted to do in Nashville, splitting the first two games of this series and stealing home ice. Now, the team is back in the friendly confines of the Joe, where they do a better job of protecting their house than anyone else in the National Hockey League.

“We’ll take the best of five and go back to our building and get at her,” Mike Babcock said after Game 2.

Put on your game face! It’s going to be one heck of a show.

Cory Emmerton became the tenth Red Wings player to become a Worldwide trending topic on Twitter, doing so after beating Pekka Rinne in the first period of Game 2. Other Wings players to become Worldwide trending topics include Darren Helm, Johan Franzen, Jimmy Howard, Mike Modano, Brad Stuart, Brendan Smith. Chris Osgood and Todd Bertuzzi. Pavel Datsyuk is the only player to become a Worldwide Trending Topic twice.

The Red Wings may have taken six penalties in Game 2, but another solid special teams effort kept that from burning them. Detroit is now 12/12 shorthanded in the series, having killed off 37 consecutive penalties overall, nearly four periods worth.

Tonight marks the 70th consecutive sellout at Joe Louis Arena, a streak dating back to December 19, 2010. The Red Wings were 31-7-3 on home ice this season. Nashville was 22-16-3 on the road.

The Red Wings are 6-8 all-time in playoff series where they’ve split the first two games on the road, though they have won four of their last six. Detroit is also 8-2 over the last 10 series where they have lost Game 1, but won Game 2.

Hal Gill did not take part in Nashville’s practice on Saturday due to a lower body injury. He is expected to be a game-time decision after missing the first two games of the series.

Darren Helm will miss the remainder of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs after surgery to repair lacerated tendons in his right forearm.

Following the success of last year’s decorated stairs celebrating 20 consecutive years of playoff appearances, Joe Louis Arena will once again be decked out for the big occasion. Vinyl photographs of the Wings’ Stanley Cup championship banners and former Stanley Cup celebrations will don the East Gate, West Gate and box office doors.

That five-o-clock shadow has given way to slow growth. It’s a good look this time of year, because playoff beards are officially in-style.

And if you are growing one, why not do so for a good cause by taking part in the 2012 Red Wings Beard-A-Thon, with all proceeds going directly to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation
