DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings and Fifth Third Bank have announced another year of the S.H.O.T.S. program (Students Helping Others Through Service), an initiative that encourages high school students in southeastern Michigan to volunteer their time in an effort to make a positive impact on their community.
High school students enrolled in Genesee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Shiawassee, Washtenaw or Wayne County schools can participate in the S.H.O.T.S. program by creating a team of up to six participants that design and carry out a project that is geared toward improving the community around them. Past projects have included helping underprivileged families make ends meet, volunteering at a local soup kitchen and organizing events to raise awareness for various causes.
Last year, the winning team from Loyola High School found several ways to serve others over the holiday season. In addition to writing letters and sending holiday cards to members of the armed services stationed overseas, they also baked over 500 cookies for homeless individuals in the Cass Corridor. The cookies were distributed on Christmas Eve along with gloves, blankets, socks and winter hats. Three team members also took part in the Belle Isle Family Fun Run on New Year’s Eve to raise money for Special Olympics.
Detroit Red Wings radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal is set to serve as the S.H.O.T.S. program’s official ambassador for the second time this year. Kal’s duties will include sitting on the program’s judging panel alongside FOX Sports Detroit television personality Shannon Hogan, Hot 107.5’s Dr. Darrius, Pat Caputo of the Oakland Press, Buck and Coop of AMP Radio 98.7 and executives from both Fifth Third Bank and the Detroit Red Wings. Student community service initiatives will be based and judged upon three primary criterions: project creativity, extent of reach and community impact.
“The S.H.O.T.S. program is an extremely worthwhile endeavor and I’m honored to be a part of it again this year,” says Kal. “The students who participate continue to amaze me with their creativity and their efforts to make an impact in the community are truly inspiring.”
The 2012-13 edition of the S.H.O.T.S. program gets underway this month and will run through the end of February. Preliminary round winners will be unveiled at the end of every month with a grand prize recipient set to be announced in March. Monthly prizes will feature a pizza party as well tickets to see the Red Wings in action on March 22, 2013, against the Dallas Stars (game/date subject to change). One student team will be awarded the Grand Prize, which includes recognition at Joe Louis Arena during a Red Wings home game, up to six tablet PCs and a $530 donation to their school on behalf of Fifth Third Bank.

Student groups may participate in as many or as few projects as they prefer, such as one five-month-long project, one project each month, multiple projects each month, or any other combination.
