DETROIT – Goalie Jimmy Howard is a late scratch for the Red Wings in tonight’s pivotal Game 4 of their best-of-seven Stanley Cup playoff series with the Boston Bruins.

Howard will miss Thursday’s game with the flu, the Red Wings announced.

Backup Jonas Gustavsson, who has played in 141 career regular-season games, is making his Stanley Cup playoff debut tonight.

The 29-year-old Swedish netminder faced the Bruins twice during the regular season, leading the Red Wings to victories in both games – 3-2 at Boston on Oct. 14, and 6-1 at Detroit on Nov. 27.

During the season, Gustavsson posted a 16-5-4 record with a 2.63 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.

The Red Wings trail the first-round series 2-1. Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Boston’s TD Garden.
