The Red Wings’ top pick (first round, 25th overall) at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Fischer skated in 305 games for Detroit before a heart condition forced the 6-foot-5, 225-pound defenseman into early retirement at the age of 26. Fischer helped the Red Wings capture the 2002 Stanley Cup and amassed 11G-49A-60-P-295PIM for the club during his all-too-brief playing career. In 2006, Detroit named Fischer their director of player development, a post he has held for the past six seasons.
