Jordin Tootoo was born February 2, 1983 in Churchill, Manitoba. The sixth choice, 98th overall selection of the Nashville Predators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Tootoo is a graduate of the WHLs Brandon Wheat Kings.

A diminutive yet hard-nosed winger, Tootoo played four seasons in Brandon and was named a WHL Eastern Conference First Team All-Star in 2003. The Wheat Kings MVP in each of his four seasons, Tootoo was named Manitobas Sportsman of the Year for 2000. Prior to joining the Wheat Kings, Tootoo played for the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL, earning Rookie of the Year and Scholastic Player of the Year honours.

Although born in Churchill, Manitoba, Tootoos hometown is Rankin Inlet, Nunavet, located on Hudson Bay. Tootoo is the first player of Inuit descent to be drafted into the NHL and the first player to be signed. A member of Canadas silver medal World Junior Team in 2003, Tootoo became the first player of Inuit descent to play a NHL game when he made his NHL debut with the Predators in 2003-04. In his first season with Nashville, Tootoo continued his hard-nose play, and did not shy away from the rough stuff. In 70 games, Tootoo registered eight points (4-4-4) in 70 games while accumulating over 130 minutes in penalties.
