Derek Meech was born April 21, 1984 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Detroit's seventh round, 229th overall selection in the 2002 NHL entry draft, Meech is a graduate of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels.
A highly skilled defenceman, Meech played his junior hockey alongside NHL star Dion Phaneuf to combine as the team's top defensive paring. After a stellar junior career, Meech made his professional debut with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2004-05. He would continue to compete in Grand Rapids over the next three seasons before making his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 2006-07.
The following season Meech saw action in 32 regular season games and earned his first NHL point in a contest against Colorado on February 18, 2008. He appeared in 14 of the clubs final 17 games but did not dress in any playoff games during his clubs route to the Cup.
