Ian White was born June 4, 1984 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The sixth round, 191st overall selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, White is a graduate of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos.

An offensively gifted defenseman, White went on to play four seasons in Swift Current registering 222 points (77-145-222) while earning WHL East Second All-Star Team honours (2002) and WHL East First All-Star Team honours (2003).

A member of Canada's silver medal World Junior team in 2003, White made his professional debut during the 2003-04 season, playing eight games with the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs. After getting a taste of the professional game the previous year, White became a mainstay on the baby Leafs blue line in 2004-05.

In 2005-06, White and the baby Leafs moved from St. John's to Toronto and after impressing the Toronto Maple Leaf staff with his strong play, White was summoned by the big club and made his NHL debut in the latter stages of the season.

On January 31, 2010, White was shipped to the Calgary Flames as part of a seven player trade that saw the Maple Leafs acquire Dion Phaneuf.

Though he reached a one-year deal with the Flames in the summer of 2010, White's time in Calgary would be short-lived. On November 17, 2010 he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with Brett Sutter in exchange for Tom Kostopoulos and Anton Babchuk.

On February 18, 2011, White was traded for the third time in just over a year. This time sent to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a second round draft pick.
