A heart ailment slowed down much of Gustavsson's first year in the NHL, limiting him to just 42 games for the club, but his 2.87 goals against average, on a club that finished 29th in the league was enough to earn him a spot on the Swedish team at 2010 Olympic Winter Games being held in Vancouver.

Following his rookie season Gustavsson was nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded for "perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey".
