Damien Brunner was born on March 9, 1986, in Kloten, Switzerland. A scoring star in his homeland, notching 60 points in 45 games for EV Zug in 2011-12, Brunner signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Red Wings in July of 2012.

He then returned to EV Zug for the start of 201213 season due to the NHL lockout. Once again, Brunner would shine offensively. In 33 games he recorded 25 goals and 32 assists for 57 points. He would join the Red Wings when play resumed in the NHL.

Brunner would suit up in 44 games for the Red Wings during the truncated 2012-13 season. He would produce 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in his premier North American season.

Unable to come to terms with Red Wings following the 2012-13 season, Brunner became an unrestricted free agent. On September 16, 2013 he was signed by the New Jersey Devils to a pro tryout contract and would subsequently ink a two-year deal with the club.
