Danny DeKeyser was born March 7, 1990, in Macomb, Michigan. He played his minor hockey for the Detroit Compuware AAA program from 20062008 before signing with the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL in Canada.

DeKeyser attended the Western Michigan Broncos after playing for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers in the 200910 season. With the Broncos, he was named a Second Team All-American in his sophomore and junior years as well as the CCHA's Best Defensive defenseman in consecutive seasons.

Upon completion of his collegiate career, DeKeyser decided to play for his hometown team and signed a two-year contract with the Red Wings on March 29, 2013. He joined the Wings a week later and would appear in 11 NHL games at the tail end of the regular season. He was then assigned to the American Hockey League, joining the Grand Rapids Griffins for six playoff games.
