FLAMES (1-3-2) at RED WINGS (4-3-1)
TV: SNET-W, FS-D
Season series: This will be the first of three meetings between the teams. Last season they split a four-game series, with the Red Wings prevailing in their last matchup 3-1 in Calgary on Jan. 31, 2012.
Big story: Detroit hopes to notch its fourth consecutive home win Tuesday night. Calgary has played just one road game so far this season, a 3-2 shootout loss at Vancouver. As eager as the Red Wings are to extend their winning ways on home ice, the Flames are even more eager to snatch up two points and climb the standings.
Flames: Calgary has struggled to produce offensively in its first six games of the season, which might explain why the Flames are trolling the bottom of the Western Conference with just four points in the standings. Although Calgary only has two wins on the season, it has also played three fewer games than any other team in the Northwest Division.
The Flames did find a silver lining on Saturday when they nearly knocked off the Western Conference’s top team, but fell 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks in a shootout.
"We've said it all along that we're a better team, and tonight we showed it," Alex Tanguay said. "For some reason, when you don't win you find ways to lose, and certainly that was one of those cases."
Red Wings: The Red Wings have suffered a number of injuries so far this season, which might help explain their lackluster performance against the Blue Jackets on Saturday night, a 4-2 loss. The loss snapped six-game point streaks for both Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
"[Columbus] had more energy, they played better and they got better and better as the game went on, and we got worse and worse," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
The Red Wings are hoping to bounce back from the loss as they face the struggling Flames at Joe Louis Arena, where Detroit is 3-1-0 this season.
Who's hot: Henrik Zetterberg leads the Red Wings in goal-scoring thanks in part to his monster performance last Friday, when he notched five points, including a hat trick.
Injury report: The Red Wings are without goaltender Jonas Gustavsson and forwards Joey MacDonald (back), Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder), Darren Helm (back), and Mikael Samuelsson (groin) … Flames forward Sven Baertschi is listed as week-to-week (hip), while defenseman Anton Babchuk (back) returned to practice this week.
