DETROIT -- Left wing Tomas Holmstrom arrived back in Detroit on Friday, where he’ll undergo an MRI examination on his injured right knee. The exam, which is scheduled for Saturday, will give team doctors a better idea as to the severity of the injury that occurred during Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the Blues in St. Louis.

Holmstrom will miss Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center.

The injury happened in the first period Thursday as Holmstrom skated after a loose puck behind the net. He was tripped up by Blues defenseman Eric Brewer, resulting in a knee-to-knee collision with Brewer's teammate Jay McClement.

Holmstrom remained down on the ice for a few minutes before skating gingerly to the bench on the weight of his left leg. He did not return to the game.

He was back in the line-up Thursday for just the third time after a sore left knee forced him to miss two games. Homstrom was injured late in the second period of the Wings' 5-2 win over Carolina on Dec. 9. He managed to play the next night in Nashville, but missed the following two contests.

Holmstrom's absence means that forward Aaron Downey will likely see more playing time against the Wild on Saturday.

In 33 games this season, Holmstrom has 14 assists, and his 17 goals is second behind Henrik Zetterberg (25).
