Notebook: Redmond returns to TV booth

Kronwall, Hasek back in lineup

DETROIT – The Red Wings TV color analyst Mickey Redmond was back in the broadcast booth at Joe Louis Arena Friday night. Redmond underwent surgery on Feb. 11 to have a small tumor on his lung removed.
“We’re happy to have him back obviously,” play-by-play announcer Ken Daniels said. “What he’s been through has been really tough and to make it back the way he has; most people don’t get back that fast.”
Redmond held off the surgery in order to play in a Red Wings Alumni game in Toronto on Feb. 8.
“He kept real quiet; nobody knew what he was going through; and he really wanted to play in Toronto,” Daniels said. “That was a goal for him. He didn’t want to bring anybody down. I give him a lot of credit.”

BACK FROM IR: Defenseman Niklas Kronwall returned to the lineup Friday after missing 13 games with a sprained clavicle. The Red Wings have won only once in the past 11 games. They’ve suffered from injuries including Dan Cleary (fractured jaw), Brian Rafalski (groin), Chris Chelios (right leg contusion) and Nicklas Lidstrom (sprained MCL).

Dominik Hasek returns to the Detroit crease for the first time since Feb. 9 in a 3-2 loss to Toronto. He missed almost three weeks with a hip flexor. Hasek will likely split time with Chris Osgood down the stretch, as the Wings will play 13 games in 30 days during March.

DRW DEBUT: Brad Stuart made his Red Wings’ debut Friday, but he’s no stranger to the Sharks. San Jose drafted Stuart third overall in 1998. Stuart played over five seasons for the Sharks before being traded to the Boston Bruins for Joe Thornton in 2005. Against his old mates, Stuart had five hits in 28 shifts.

SHARK ATTACK: San Jose called up right Devin Setoguchi from Worchester of the American Hockey League on Thursday. The 21-year-old, who has split time between the Sharks and their farm team this season, spotted the Sharks a 2-0 lead when he scored his 10th goal of the season at 52-seconds of the second period. He added his second goal of the game at 9:17 of the third -- the eventual game-winner -- on the power play.

TWENTY CLUB: San Jose has just one 20-goal scorer (Milan Michalek), while Detroit has four (Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg). Sharks right wing Jonathan Cheechoo is sitting on 19 goals.

POWER-SURGE: San Jose has struggled with overall team scoring, too. Prior to Friday, the Sharks were rank No. 23 in goals per game (2.56), while Detroit was third, scoring 3.05 goals per game.

PLAYOFFS: San Jose and Detroit faced off in last year’s Western Conference semifinal. The Red Wings won the series 4-2, including three consecutive wins to finish the series.

HUMP DAY SUCCESS: The Red Wing’s next home game is Wednesday, March 5 against St. Louis. It’s significant because Detroit hasn’t lost on a Wednesday night all season (10-0-0).
