Fleury's trip keeps Pens laughing

Incident is an instant hit on YouTube with over 22,000 views

DETROIT — Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury hasn’t stopped hearing about his grand entrance to the 2008 Stanley Cup finals.

Fleury tripped stepping onto the ice for Game 1. And while it wasn’t the ideal start for the Penguins, who lost 4-0 to the Wings on Saturday night, the stumble has kept the Penguins loose.

“Like 20 of us were huddled in on a computer last night after the game to try to watch it,” Pens defenseman Rob Scuderi said. “It was pretty funny just to see him disappear.”

Fleury braced the fall with his stick and blocker, but Maxime Talbot still had to hit the brakes to avoid his fallen teammate.

“I’ve never done that before,” Fleury said of the spill.

The “Flower” is just one of Pittsburgh’s young stars who struggled in the limelight on Saturday.

“We’re pretty tense after a loss,” Scuderi added. “To come back and see the guys laugh about, it’s a nice thing. We can try to get back on the right track today.”

Fleury rehearsed his running stride at practice Sunday afternoon to make sure that it won’t happen again.

“Yeah, I don't know if anyone saw that, but that was a little tough one for him,” Sidney Crosby said.

Anyone?

Don Cherry showed the highlight on his popular Coach’s Corner segment on CBC during the first intermission.

It’s a YouTube hit, too — as of Sunday night, Fleury’s showstopper had over 22,000 views.

Even Versus’ Doc Emrick chuckled as he described the event live on the air: “And Marc-Andre Fleury leading his team out took a tumble onto the ice!”

But all jokes aside, the Penguins aren’t laughing about the way they played on Saturday.

“It was pretty funny watching him fall flat on his face yesterday,” Scuderi said. “Obviously, we didn’t think the loss was too funny. Once it’s over, there’s really nothing you can do about it. We can try to stay loose, laugh at it, and come back strong.”
