Three Questions: Wings-Rangers

DRW.com's Michael Caples analyzes the Wings' fifth game

So Marian Hossa scored?

Yes, Marian Hossa has scored his 300th career goal. In dramatic fashion, no less; his first goal in a Red Wings' uniform capped off a 5-4 comeback win in overtime. Hossa needs to thank his new center, Pavel Datsyuk, for lugging the puck in deep then firing over a pass to him from the corner. Hossa got his stick on the puck in traffic, and beat goaltender Henrik Lundqvist far side. It was only a matter of time, considering that Hossa had 18 shots coming into tonight’s game, and four more against the Rangers before he scored 23 seconds into the extra period. Now that he’s finally knocked one home, there’s no stopping him.

What was the surprising statistic of the night?

The first two periods of the game flew by tonight (around an hour total), and there’s a pretty simple reason why – there weren’t any penalties. Hossa was whistled for interference with 4:42 left in the second period, the first penalty of the game. The Rangers took two penalties before the end of the second segment, so the stats sheet didn’t look too unusual by the end of the game, but it’s still surprising that an NHL game lasted that long without any trips to the penalty box.

What was the best goal of the night?

Even though Hossa’s goal won the game, Mikael Samuelsson’s tip-in 28 seconds into the game was the best goal of the night. Derek Meech fired a shot from the point, and Samuelsson redirected the puck, which was waist high, into the net behind Lundqvist. It takes incredible hand-eye coordination to pull off a play like that. Not to mention the fact that he tallied the opening marker so early into the game, a quick strike to get into Lundqvist’s head and the Rangers’ psyche.
