DETROIT -- It took newly acquired forward Marian Hossa five games and 23 shots to finally break the ice. Hossa scored his first goal as a Red Wings and his first game-winner of the season to defeat the New York Rangers, 5-4, in overtime  Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena.

The goal was No. 300 of his NHL career. He also added an assist on Tomas Holmstrom’s second period goal. Despite not finding the net in his first four games, Hossa still managed to contribute to the Red Wings’ high-powered offense. He is currently tied for third-place in the NHL with three power play assists.

Holmstrom second best in lighting the lamp: With his fifth goal of the season in tonight’s game against the NY Rangers, Holmstrom has scored in each of the Red Wings’ first five games this season. With the goal tonight, Holmstrom moves into second-place among NHL scorers. Only Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek (six) has found the back of the net more. Holmstrom is also one goal short from tying a personal record. He scored in six consecutive games last season.

Streak comes to an end: Defensemen Brian Rafalski’s four game point streak to start the 2008-09 season ended tonight. Rafalski had collected one goal and four assists in Detroit’s first four games to lead the team. He was one game shy of matching the franchise record for consecutive games, which at least one point to start a season by a Wing’s defensemen, set both by Nicklas Lidstrom (2006-07) and Larry Murphy (1999-00), who started their respective seasons tallying a point in Detroit’s first five games. Henrik Zetterberg owns the team record of 17 straight games with a point, which was set last season.

By the numbers: Two of the Original Six, the Red Wings and Rangers have faced each other 573 times, with Detroit winning 259 of the games in the series. New York has won 210 times with 103 games having ended in a tie. Detroit’s all-time home record against the Rangers stands at 164-78-45.
