Three Questions: Wings-Kings

DRW.com's MIchael Caples analyzes the Wings' ninth game

What was the turning point of the contest?

Facing a one-goal deficit in the third period, the Red Wings were controlling the play, looking for the tying goal.  With a combination of luck and being in the right place at the right time, Valtteri Filppula picked off an errant pass from defenseman Denis Gauthier.  The 24-year-old center made no mistake, beating the Kings’ goaltender Jason Labarbera far side on his blocker to tie the game for Detroit.  The Wings never looked back, and wrapped up the 4-3 win in a shootout.

What was the best goal of the game?

With the Red Wings on the power play in the middle of the second period, Hossa picked up the puck in the neutral zone and rushed into the Los Angeles zone.  As he came in, he broke in between the Kings’ defense, and ripped a wrist shot.  The puck beat Labarbera to the far post, again on the blocker side.  Hossa utilized his speed and his quick release to both surprise and beat the defense and Labarbera for his fifth goal of the season.

What was the strangest part of the night?

Forward Tomas Kopecky was aggressively forechecking like usual in the first period, when he checked Gauthier in the Los Angeles corner.  However, right after the hit, the play was blown dead, and neither of the players were seriously hurt.  Afterwards, instant replay showed that during the hit, Kopecky’s arm went directly through the glass.  I’ve seen the glass on boards break before (in fact, it happened just last week in a Boston Bruins game), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen somebody’s arm go right through it.  Luckily neither of the players were hurt.
