Three Questions: Wings-Ducks

DRW.com's Michael Caples analyzes the Wings' tenth game

Who was the star of the game for Detroit?

The Red Wings were able to force overtime due to the heart of Dan Cleary.  With less than two minutes remaining, Cleary beat out the Anaheim defense (and thus an icing call) to the puck in the Ducks zone.  Cleary flew into the corner, dishing the puck to a wide-open Henrik Zetterberg and taking a bone-crushing hit to do so.  Without Cleary’s gutsy play, the Wings wouldn’t have gotten a point out of the game Wednesday night.

What’s the best part about a Wings-Ducks game?

The physicality that accompanies a match-up between the Red Wings and Ducks never disappoints.  Every time these two clubs meet, the game gives off a playoff type of feel.  Tonight’s contest was no different.  The Red Wings made the long skate to the penalty box 10 different times on Wednesday, while the Ducks committed nine penalties of their own.  Darren McCarty dropped the gloves for the Wings’ first fight of the year, squaring off with Brad May.  Even the least likely of Red Wings were getting into it, with Chris Osgood and Pavel Datsyuk both having some ‘conversations’ with members of the opposition.

What’s up with all the octopi?

Al Sobotka must be proud during the opening games of the Red Wings road trip.  In Los Angeles on Monday, an octopus hit the ice in the Staples Center.  On Wednesday, three octopi found their way from the stands to the ice.  Both are impressive feats for West Coast Wings fans.  It’s always good to see that the Wings have fans wherever they go.
