Red Wings for Red Kettles returns
DETROIT -- For the third consecutive year, the Red Wings and the Salvation Army are joining forces in “Red Wings for Red Kettles”. The team will participate in a variety of activities to assist the Salvation Army during its annual holiday campaign. For the third consecutive year Red Wings Executive Vice President and general manager Ken Holland serves as the honorary Red Kettle campaign chairman. Last year’s campaign in Metro Detroit raised just over $8.2 million, this year’s goal is $8.5 million to sustain its annual services.

A new element of this year’s campaign is the online red kettle, which allows people to make donations through the Salvation Army’s secure Web site. The National Hockey League is a partner in this initiative, as all 30 teams have online kettles for fans to make donations. In addition, coach Mike Babcock and forward Darren McCarty have their own kettles, allowing Wings fans three opportunities to show their support online.

“I’m excited to once again be a part of Red Kettle campaign,” Holland said. “This year the need to support The Salvation Army and its many programs is more important than ever. With the variety of ways to donate, I encourage Red Wings fans everywhere to join in our efforts and assist The Salvation Army in meeting its goals.”

The Wings will host red kettles at home games on Monday, December 15 vs. Colorado; Thursday, December 18 vs. San Jose, and Saturday, December 20 vs. Los Angeles. Fans attending these games will have the opportunity to make a monetary donation at red kettles stationed throughout the Joe Louis Arena concourse.

Fans who would like to donate should click here to join Babcock, McCarty and Kirk Maltby.

Founded by William Booth in London, England in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. At work in Michigan since 1887, The Salvation Army operates 180 facilities throughout the state. In 2007, these facilities were involved in providing more than 2.8 million meals and 770,314 nights of shelter for the homeless of Southeast Michigan alone. The Salvation Army uses $.83 of every dollar raised to provide direct services to people in need each and every day of the year.
