Lidstrom, Datsyuk added to West roster

DETROIT – The Red Wings won’t have a starter on the Western Conference squad when the 57th All-Star Game gets underway in Montreal on Jan. 25. But the Wings will be represented –  and rightly so – by captain Nicklas Lidstrom and center Pavel Datsyuk.

For Lidstrom, the All-Star Game at Bell Centre will be his 10th straight All-Star appearance and his 11th overall. Datsyuk is a third time All-Star, having played in the 2004 game in St. Paul, Minn., and last season in Atlanta.

With his 11th All-Star game selection, Lidstrom passes former Red Wings Ted Lindsay and Steve Yzerman for third-best all-time in franchise history. Legendary forward Gordie Howe played in an NHL record 23 All-Star games between 1948-80, and hall-of-famer Alex Delvecchio played in 13 games from 1953-67.

All 15 Western teams are represented on this year's All-Star roster.

The San Jose Sharks, who own the NHL's best record (29-5-5), will be represented by center Joe Thornton and defenseman Dan Boyle, who will make his All-Star debut.

In addition to Boyle, others making their first All-Star Game appearance are Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom, Nashville defenseman Shea Weber and Los Angeles left wing Dustin Brown.

Others added to the Western Conference team include Columbus left wing Rick Nash, Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo and Edmonton defenseman Sheldon Souray.

This year's high-scoring West attack is rounded out by Calgary right wing Jarome Iginla, Colorado right wing Milan Hejduk, Dallas center Mike Modano, Phoenix right wing Shane Doan and St. Louis center Keith Tkachuk.

The players selected today join six players voted by fans to the starting lineup: defenseman Brian Campbell and forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks, and defenseman Scott Niedermayer, forward Ryan Getzlaf and goaltender J.S. Giguere of the Anaheim Ducks.

The Western Conference roster additions were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, after consultation with league general managers.
