Three Questions: Wings-Stars

DRW.com's Michael Caples analyzes the Wings' 40th game

What was evident during the 6-1 win?

The Wings’ depth was on full display Thursday night, as six different players recorded a goal.  Marian Hossa, Dan Cleary, Kirk Maltby, Tomas Holmstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg all scored for Detroit, a testament to how talented the Detroit roster is from top to bottom.  Forwards on three of the Wings’ four lines found the back of the net during the 6-1 win, and the line of Jiri Hudler, Valtteri Filppula, and Mikael Samuelsson had their fair share of chances as well.  When all four lines can generate offense the way the Wings’ forward units can, it’s a hard team to match up against.

How did Datsyuk and Lidstrom celebrate their All-Star nods?

The Red Wings will be represented by Datsyuk and captain Nicklas Lidstrom at the NHL All-Star Game later this month, as both were named to the Western Conference squad yesterday.  The duo celebrated the fact that they will be heading up to Montreal by teaming up for the play of the night.  The game may have already been out of reach, but for a little extra insurance, Datsyuk scored his 18th of the season on a Detroit power play.  The talented center won a face-off to the right of the Dallas goal, throwing the puck right onto Lidstrom’s stick.  The six-time Norris Trophy winner waited patiently for the play to develop, then passed it right back to Datsyuk, who rifled a one-timer wrist shot into the back of the net.  The goal was simple, quick, and All-Star worthy.

How does Marty Turco feel when he comes ‘home’?

Turco, the former Michigan Wolverine netminder, spent a lot of time at Joe Louis Arena as a college athlete, and had a lot of success in the NHL building.  The Joe became a very unfriendly place to him after he signed his first professional contract, however.  Coming into Thursday’s game, Turco was winless in regular season games at JLA (with a 0-7-2 record) and not much better in the playoffs.  He only lasted 40 minutes before getting pulled by coach Dave Tippett, giving up four goals on 18 shots.  It all started with Hossa’s quick wrister, which caught the entire building, including Turco, by surprise.  Hossa took a feed from Brad Stuart up near the Dallas blue line, and while standing along the boards above the circle, turned and whipped a shot towards the goal.  Turco got a piece of it, but the hard shot found a way through, giving the Wings the early lead.  A little while later, Cleary got tangled up with the Dallas goalie out in front of the crease, but he was still able to get his stick on the rolling rebound to make the score 2-0.  Chants of “Turco, Turco, Turco” ran down from the stands of JLA, and the Wings never looked back as they cruised to a big win.
