Wings continue battle against breast cancer
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. game. The game is part of the National Hockey League’s Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) month when all NHL players wear special HFC decals on the back of their helmets to signify the NHL’s collective effort to raise cancer awareness.
Last year’s Red Wings Breast Cancer Awareness initiative raised more than $30,000 for local families battling breast cancer.
Red Wings' players will use pink tape on their sticks during the pre-game warm-ups, and in support of the HFC campaign, Red Wings coaches and front office executives will wear lavender ties, which signify the fight against all forms of cancer. Lavender is the NHL’s designated color for this year’s HFC initiative.
The ties and sticks will be individually autographed and available in a silent auction on the Joe Louis concourse at the game. Other silent auction items include:
- A specially designed Red Wings goalie mask signed by Ty Conklin, Dominik Hasek, Jimmy Howard and Chris Osgood.
- Valtteri Filppula’s game worn jersey from the January 2, 2007 game retiring Steve Yzerman’s jersey.
Other planned activities and opportunities for fans attending the game include Red Wings Breast Cancer Awareness items available at merchandise stands throughout the concourse, including:
- DRW breast cancer awareness pins
- DRW women’s breast cancer fleece jackets
- Puck Draw
- The Red Wings wives will hold a puck draw. For just $20, fans can purchase a puck autographed by one of the current Red Wings.
- One lucky fan will win the chance to meet a Wings player after the game.
- Wear Pink!
All fans in attendance who wear pink will be eligible to win autographed Red Wings memorabilia. The fan with the best pink attire will win an autographed Chris Chelios jersey!
All proceeds from the breast cancer awareness merchandise sales, the puck draw and the silent auction will benefit local hockey families battling breast cancer.
The team will host breast cancer patients, survivors and their families in an executive suite at the game.
