\'The Beard is Back\' for charity
DETROIT -- The Red Wings are encouraging their fans to join in one of hockey’s long-standing and unique traditions, the playoff beard, by participating in “Beard-A-Thon” a special fundraising program that will benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Participants in the Red Wings Beard-A-Thon can invite their friends, family and associates to pledge money for their playoff beard with the fan who raises the most money winning a team signed Red Wings Winter Classic jersey. Fans who are unable to participate by growing a playoff beard can make a donation in support of a Red Wings' player or personality who is growing their playoff beard.
WINGS CORNER

Participating in the Beard-A-Thon will be Red Wings players and personalities, including FOX Sports Detroit’s play-by-play announcer Ken Daniels.  Fans can pledge a set dollar amount for every day that a participant maintains his beard, or make a one time contribution.  For more information or to enroll in the Red Wings Beard-A-Thon, go to beardathon.com/redwings.

The Stanley Cup playoff beard traces its origins to the early 1980s when the New York Islanders began the tradition on their way to winning the Stanley Cup four years in a row. Since then, the playoff beard has become an annual tradition for both players and fans. Detroit will be skating to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Wings recorded back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

The Detroit Red Wings Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, invests in the future of our community by providing funds and resources to worthy causes that help grow the sport of hockey.  Established in 2005, the Foundation supports several initiatives and organizations including: the development of inner city youth hockey, the fight against cancer, a wide array of children’s health, educational and recreational activities and other needs of the community through the sport of hockey. Recent grants from the Detroit Red Wings Foundation were awarded to: The Salvation Army STRIVE Hockey Program; the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association OneGoal Program; the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center for their special needs hockey team, the MORC Stars; the Variety FAR Conservatory of Therapeutic and Performing Arts for their FAR Flyers hockey program for children with special needs; and the Gladwin Area Hockey Association for their Learn to Play program. Through the Toast of Hockeytown, their annual fundraiser, player appearances and other team-sponsored events, the Red Wings help raise over one million dollars annually for various organizations in our community.
