The beard is back!
DETROIT -- The Red Wings and their fans will celebrate a long-standing and unique hockey tradition by welcoming back their playoff beards as the Wings begin their defense of their 11th Stanley Cup Championship.

“The players and fans are ready to throw away their razors,” said Red Wings Senior Vice President of Business Affairs Steve Violetta.  “It’s our 18th straight trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs … Here we grow again!”

The Stanley Cup playoff beard traces its origins to the early 1980’s when the New York Islanders began the tradition on their way to winning the Stanley Cup four years in a row. Since then, the playoff beard has become an annual tradition for both players and fans. Detroit will be skating to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Wings recorded back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

Wings fans can join in “The Beard is Back” theme by voting for the Red Wings' player (see below) with the best playoff beard, and by submitting photos (also below) of their own playoff beards to see how far they can grow through the playoffs.

PLAYOFF TICKETS ON SALE: The defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings have begun selling tickets for the first two rounds of the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs at Joe Louis Arena.

Most individual playoff tickets remain locked in at last year’s reduced prices (down between 17-37 percent over 2007 playoff prices for the first round alone).

Fans can purchase single-game playoff tickets at the Joe Louis Arena box office, all TicketMaster locations, including Hockeytown Café, Hockeytown Authentics in Troy, Mich., or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Fans also can purchase tickets by logging on to DetroitRedWings.com.

BECOME A SEASON-TICKET HOLDER: Prior to March 20, fans still have a chance to place a small deposit on one of several 2009-10 Season Ticket Plans to take advantage of the great benefits, including savings of up to 20 percent off of this year’s playoff box office prices and preferred pricing on next year’s season tickets.

Another great advantage of being a season-ticket holder is the “Pay as the Wings Play” payment plan, which eliminates the need to pay for the entire playoffs up front. With this popular plan, season ticket holders will only be charged for home games that are guaranteed to be played. For example, fans will initially only be charged for the first two games of the opening round. They won’t be charged for an additional first round game until a third home game is determined necessary. This new billing system will continue throughout all playoff rounds. Call the Red Wings' Ticket Sales & Service Office at 313-396-7575 for more information.
