Camp continues at Centre I.C.E.
TRAVERSE CITY - The Red Wings kicked off their 2005 Training Camp Tuesday morning with many new faces and a fresh outlook on the upcoming season.

It was also the first chance for the team to get a taste of new head coach Mike Babcock's practice routine and the result was a high-tempo and intense day at Centre I.C.E. Arena.

"It was probably the fastest tempo of any training camp that I've been involved with here," said forward Brendan Shanahan. "(Babock and his staff) are professionals. They get right to work and they have an expectation of us to be prepared to work."

The day began with on-ice conditioning and drills, followed by two, 30-minute scrimmages and ended with off-ice conditioning in the weight room.

"They explained the drills once and they want us to execute. There's a real professionalism that they showed us on the first day that's expected from us," said Shanahan.

The day's scrimmage was highlighted by two goals from Henrik Zetterberg along with tallies from Shanahan and Jason Williams as Team B defeated Team C 5-2.

Chris Osgood was back in a Red Wings uniform for the first time since the 2001 Training Camp as he took part in on and off-ice workouts with Team A.

Day 2 of camp opened with an emphasis on forechecking and according to Babcock, each day of camp will focus on a theme.

"Today was a lot lighter day for the players," said Babcock. "But we'll be back at it tomorrow."

Scrimmages continued as Team A defeated Team C 2-1 on goals from Donald MacLean and Derek Meech. Eric Himmelfarb and Jamie Rivers assisted on each of the tallies.
