The last two meetings in this historic rivalry resulted in hard
fought ties, including a 3-3 final Oct. 22, 2005 at Yost Arena and a 1-1 final in the clubs' last contest at "The Joe" on Feb. 5, 2005. The Wolverines hold the edge over the Spartans in the all-time series at Joe Louis Arena with 17 wins to the Spartans' 15. Michigan State has defeated Michigan in two of the last three meetings at "The Joe."
The upcoming game at Joe Louis Arena will feature some of the best college hockey players in the nation, including 17 players selected in the NHL Draft. The Wolverines currently are ranked No. 8 in the country and No. 3 in the CCHA, while the Spartans are tied for the No. 7 position in the conference.
The game between the Wolverines and Spartans will serve as the nightcap of the "Hockey Day in Michigan" lineup. "Hockey Day in Michigan" events at Joe Louis Arena also include high school matchups between Brother Rice and Royal Oak at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 and University of Detroit Jesuit and Grosse Pointe North at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, as well as a "Hockey is Fun" clinic and youth hockey games.
