Chelios returns for 23rd season
DETROIT -- General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the Detroit Red Wings have re-signed veteran defensemen Chris Chelios to a one-year contract and have completed entry level contracts with three Red Wings draft picks - Evan McGrath (three years), Jonathan Ericsson (two years) and Stephan Liv (one year). In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the contracts are not available.

Chelios returns for his 23rd season in the National Hockey League and eighth with the Red Wings. The three-time Norris Trophy-winner (1989, '93 and '96) appeared in 81 contests last season averaging 18:28 in playing time and finishing with a +22.

"Chris proved this past season that he can still play at a very high level," said Holland. "He was a key member of our penalty kill that was one of the best in the league and he brings a great deal of experience and passion to the rink every day."

McGrath (C, 5-11, 181) was Detroit's fourth-round pick (128th overall) in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He is coming off a career-high season with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League where he tallied 37 goals and 77 assists for 114 points in 67 games.

Ericsson (D, 6-5, 201) was selected in the ninth round (291st overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He has played the last three seasons for Sodertalje in the Swedish Elite League.

Liv (G, 6-0, 176) was Detroit's fourth-round pick (102nd overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for HV71 Jonkoping of the Swedish Elite League and also was the backup goaltender for Team Sweden as they captured the gold medals in both the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2006 World Championships.
