Red Wings ink Markov for one year
DETROIT -- Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced the team has signed defenseman Danny Markov to a one-year contract. In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the deal are not available.

Markov, 29, spent the 2005-06 season with the Nashville Predators and tallied 11 points (0-11-11) with 62 penalty minutes (PIM) in 58 games. He missed 17 games with a variety of minor injuries (ankle, knee, groin), but was healthy for Nashville's five Stanley Cup Playoff games against San Jose.

The Moscow native also represented Russia at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he played in all eight of Russia's contests and recorded two assists.

Detroit will be the sixth National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that Markov has played for during his nine-year NHL career. His four-year stint (1997-2001) with the Toronto Maple Leafs is his longest stay with any NHL club, since being drafted by the Leafs 223rd overall in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. After playing 200 regular season and 40 playoff games with Toronto, Markov was traded to Phoenix before the 2001-02 season.

In his first season with Phoenix (2001-02), he posted career highs in points (36), goals (6) and assists (30) and led the Coyotes in power-play assists (15). He played one more year in Phoenix and was shipped to the Carolina Hurricanes prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign. Markov played 44 games with the Hurricanes and was leading the club in average ice time (23:39) when he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers midway through the season. Markov became a key member of the Flyers' defensive corps as it advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals before being ousted in Game Seven by Tampa Bay. He appeared in all 18 of Philadelphia's playoff games in 2004. Markov idolized former Red Wings' defenseman Viacheslav Fetisov growing up in Moscow. He captured a bronze medal with Russia at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, UT.
