Red Wings add veteran Johnson
DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced the Red Wings signed center Greg Johnson to a one-year contract. In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the deal are not available.

Johnson, 35, begins is second stretch with the Red Wings after playing the last seven seasons with the Nashville Predators. In 2005-06, he skated in 68 games and collected 19 points (11-8-19) with 10 penalty minutes. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native missed 13 games due to a strained groin, but was healthy for Nashville's five playoff games in 2006, averaging 14:42 of ice time and notching one assist. Johnson is the Predators' leader in games played (502) and ranks second in goals (93).

During his 12-year National Hockey League (NHL) career, Johnson has played 785 games with four clubs (Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Nashville) and scored 145 goals along with 224 assists. He was drafted 33rd overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, but made his NHL debut and scored his first goal as a Red Wing on October 5, 1993, at Dallas. Originally acquired by Detroit through a trade with Philadelphia on June 20, 1993, Johnson played four seasons with Detroit (1993-94 to 1996-97) and tallied 81 points (33-48-81) in 177 games.

Midway through the 1996-97 season, Johnson was traded by the Red Wings to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played the remainder of the season with Pittsburgh and was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks after just five games in 1997-98. He was acquired by the Predators in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft.

Johnson has made Detroit his off-season residence throughout his NHL career.
