Hartigan\'s stay is short; Ellis returns to lineup
DETROIT -- Following a one-day stint with the Red Wings, veteran center Mark Hartigan was re-assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids on Friday.

Team doctors have approved the return of forward Matt Ellis to the lineup. He had been suffering headaches ever since taking a hit to the head on Thanksgiving night in Nashville. He will be made available for Saturday’s game against the Phoenox Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena.

Hartigan, 30, logged nearly four-minutes of ice time in the Red Wings’ 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday. He skated six shifts on the Wings’ fourth line with wingers Aaron Downey and Tomas Kopecky.

Thursday’s game was Hartigan’s 80th career NHL game. He has also played for Atlanta, Columbus and Anaheim, totaling 16 goals and 10 assists.

Despite going back to Grand Rapids after a 24-hour stay in Detroit, coach Mike Babcock gave praise to Hartigan following Thursday’s game.

“I thought Hartigan played real well,” Babcock said. “He didn’t play much, because those guys (Tampa Bay) don’t use a deep bench, so it was hard to get those guys out there. But I thought he was real good.”

Hartigan leads the Griffins and is tied for fourth in the AHL with 11 goals. He also leads Grand Rapids with five power play goals and is tied for second with 17 points through 20 games.
