Wings sign Lidstrom through 2010
DETROIT -- Red Wings general manager Ken Holland announced the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom on a two-year contract. The contract will keep Lidstrom in a Wings jersey through the 2009-2010 season.  In maintaining club policy, additional terms of the contract are not available.

“Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years," Holland said. “He’s a great captain and role model who does everything right both on and off the ice. We’re proud to have him continue as a Red Wing for another two years.”

Lidstrom and the Red Wings play at St. Louis tonight (8:30 p.m. ET) and travel to Colorado on Thursday (9 p.m. ET). Both games can be seen on FSN Detroit and heard on 97.1 FM/1270 The Ticket.

The book on Lidstrom:
  • Currently second in NHL in plus/minus with +22, and scoring by a defenseman with 32 points (3-29--32).
  • Has points in 21 of last 28 games (2-25--27).
  • Has played more games (1,212) in the first 15-plus seasons of his career than any other player in the history of the NHL, missing just 22 games in that span.
  • Since entering the league in 1991-92, he has the highest plus/minus rating in the NHL with a +360.
  • Is the highest scoring defenseman in Red Wings' history, and currently ranks second all-time among Swedish-born players in scoring with 900 points (ahead of No. 3 Peter Forsberg’s 871).
  • Is the winner of the Norris Trophy five of the last six seasons (2001-02-03, 2006-07) . Only Bobby Orr (eight) and Doug Harvey (seven) have won more.
  • Joins hall of famers Orr, Harvey and Pierre Pilote as the only player in NHL history to win three consecutive Norris Trophies.
  • Named the "best European-trained player ever in the NHL," and ninth-best overall player since 1967 by The Hockey News.
