Wings sign Finnish forward for one-year

DETROIT -- The Red Wings signed Finnish star forward Ville Leino to a one-year entry level contract on Saturday.

In keeping with team policy, additional terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Leino, 24, played for Jokerit Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League in 2007-08. He led Jokerit with 77 points (28 goals, 49 assists) in 55 games. He recently received the Oskanen Award, given annually to the league's best player in the regular-season.

He finished second in league scoring and plus-minus rating (+34), and third in goals. Leino also was awarded the Finnish Elite League's Star Player Award.

In six FEL seasons, Leino has scored 69 goals with 136 assists for 205 points in 294 career games. Before the 2007-08 season, he played two seasons with HPK Hameenlinna and three years with Ilves Tampere.
