Osgood equals Hasek with win No. 389

DETROIT – Monday’s win for Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood was a bit of irony.

Not only was the Wings’ 4-1 win over the Sabres his 389th NHL victory, it also move him into a 10th-place tie with his former Detroit teammate Dominik Hasek in a town where Hasek played most of his illustrious career.

“I don't know a lot of things, but I knew that today that I could tie Dom here, so that's pretty cool,” Osgood told The Associated Press. “It’s a great honor for me to be mentioned with a goalie of his stature. To do it here is a little more special.”

Osgood stopped 32 Sabres’ shots on Monday. His only mistake was allowing Paul Gaustad to convert on a third-period scramble in front of the Wings’ net. The lone goal was a lost bid for Osgood’s 50th career shutout.

This season alone, Osgood passed four retired goalies on the all-time wins list, leaping Tom Barrasso (369), Andy Moog (372), John Vanbiesbrouck (374) and Mike Vernon (385). Only two active goalies – Martin Brodeur and Curtis Joseph – have more career wins than Osgood.

In his 15th NHL season, Osgood has spent must of his career in Detroit with two different stints with the Wings.

During his time in Detroit, he’s established himself as a winner and a bona fide candidate for the Hall of Fame upon his retirement. To his credit, he has his name on three Stanley Cups, has won the Jennings Trophy twice, is a two-time all-star, and is second all-time in franchise history with 305 wins.

He is the team’s all-time leader in playoff shutouts (12) and victories, amassing a 52-29 record in 10 seasons.

And it’s games like Monday’s that get the Wings and Osgood as playoff-ready as humanly possible.

“These are difficult games,” Osgood told The AP.. “Everybody we seem to be playing of late seems to be on the brink of making it or fighting somebody else for a playoff spot. It's good games for us going into the playoffs. It gets us as playoff-ready as possible.”
