Red Wings sign Leino to two-year deal
DETROIT -- Red Wings general manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has re-signed restricted free agent forward Ville Leino to a new two-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Leino, 25, appeared in 13 games for Detroit in 2008-09. He finished with five goals and four assists while posting a plus-5 rating. He scored his first career National Hockey League goal in his first career NHL game on Jan. 31 at Washington.

Leino also played in seven games for the Red Wings during their 2009 Stanley Cup finals run, posting two assists.

The native of Savonlinna, Finland spent the majority of the 2008-09 season with Detroit’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 57 games with Grand Rapids, he registered 46 points, including 31 asists. He then led the Griffins in scoring during the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs, finishing with 13 points in 10 postseason games.
