Samuelsson represents Sweden at camp

Samuelsson represents Sweden at camp
DETROIT – Forward Jesper Samuelsson is following in some big footsteps. Not only did he play for the same Swedish third level team as Jonathan Ericsson, but also he spent last season playing for Timra. Red Wings’ star forward Henrik Zetterberg worked on his craft with Timra before jumping to North America.

“In Timra they talk about Zetterberg,” Samuelsson said. “He’s like a big role model for all of those young guys.”

Samuelsson, 21, doesn’t feel the pressure though, rather he benefits from knowing how much work it takes to make the jump to the NHL. Ericsson’s story encourages Samuelsson as he’s seen a player from the little town of Hasten, Sweden, make it to the big league.

“It’s good to know that he came from such a small town and played here,” Samuelsson said.

RETURNING TO THE JOE: This week isn’t the first time goalie Jordan Pearce has skated at Joe Louis Arena. The former Notre Dame goalie has played his fair share of hockey tournaments at the Joe, winning the CCHA championship last March. Four months later, Pearce finds himself back on the ice, but for a very different reason.

“I’ve had some good memories here and it’s nice to look up in the rafters and see Notre Dame still hanging from that rafter,” he said. “It feels a little comfortable, but it’s a lot different being on this side of the hallway though.”

COACH-PLAYER BOND: University of Michigan defenseman Chad Langlais reunited with his former high school coach Andy Weidenbach at camp this week. Langlais received an invitation to attend camp last month and was excited to learn that he’d work with his coach from Cranbrook-Kingswood in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where they won a state title together.

“I always knew that he came out here to do this, but it helps to see him,” Langlais said. “It helps to know the drills he runs. He used to do these exact drills three years ago.”

During the 15-minute break for the on-ice workout session on Friday, Langlais and Andy Miele asked Weidenbach to take a picture of them at the blue line while the ice was being resurfaced. His former coach obliged and then Miele snapped a photo of coach and player to remember the moment.

HELPING HAND:
Former Kitchener Rangers and Oshawa Generals goalie Mark Packwood attended prospect camp this week.

“He helps me out at some of my camps during the summer,” Wings goalie coach Jim Bedard said. “The goalies can work harder and longer when they’re in the net because they have a third guy to spell them off. He’s like a bullpen catcher. He understands what his role is here and he’s enjoying it. He’s basically a Red Wing for a week.”

Packwood was one of three goalies at prospect camp this week, along with Jordan Pearce and Thomas McCollum.

Intern Adam Rice contributed to this report. Christy Hammond is an intern in the Red Wings' New Media & Publishing Department at Joe Louis Arena.
