Wings give gift to Children's Hospital
Child Life Services program to benefit from Wings' generosity
DETROIT -- The NHL season is more than a month away, but that didn't stop the Red Wings from scoring a big goal for children on Friday.
Before a large lunchtime crowd that had gathered on DMC's Brush Mall, the Wings made a check presentation to the Detroit Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Michigan. The $19,525 donation will benefit the Child Life Services, which incorporates non-pharmalogocal techniques, in conjunction with percribed medications, to help make young patients comfortable.
Last season, the Red Wings donated $5 from each ticket sold to DMC friend or family members. In total, 3,905 tickets during the regular-season and playoffs were sold through the DMC program.
"It goes beyond a mere sponsorship," said Steve Violetta, the Red Wings senior vice president of business affairs. "Obviously, the DMC docs are very important to our players, very important to our coaching staff. There is a sponsorship element of course, but more importantly, really, it's about giving back to the community.
"At the end of the day, it was almost $20,000 between DMC employees and the Red Wings that went back to kids."
Children's Hospital President Dr. Herman Gray was welcomed the Wings' officials to the downtown campus, and was thrilled to accept the team's generous gift.
"This donation is directed to Child Life Services and it will help make the hospital experience less frightening and stressful for the children we care for," Dr. Gray said. "Using kid-friendly techniques, such as interactive play, our Child Life specialists offer comfort, support and education to our patients throughout the hospital. Through the generosity of donors such as the Red Wings, we are able to treat the whole child – physically, mentally and emotionally.
"For more than 120 years, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has existed only to care for children. We would not be able to offer this level of care if not for the generosity of donors like the Detroit Red Wings. Thank you for your support and for recognizing the value of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan to the community at large and for helping us to meet the needs of those we serve."
