May gets try-out with Red Wings
DETROIT -- Looking to add some toughness to their line-up, the Red Wings have granted veteran forward Brad May a pro try-out.

May, 37, skated with the Red Wings on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, his first time on the ice since last season.

The Toronto native split time with Anaheim and Toronto last season, compiling one goal, six assists and 89 penalty minutes over 58 games.  In 17 NHL seasons, he has 127 goals and 160 assists in 2,182 games.

May headed into the 2008-09 off-season as a free agent, and said that it was a while before he heard from any teams.

“The phone’s been ringing off the hook for years, but no calls this summer,” he joked.

When asked if he made the call to the Red Wings himself, May said that he didn’t know what actions were taken to get him the try-out.

“Quite honestly that’s what we have agents for,” May said.  “With that all being said, I’m not exactly sure that how it went down, I don’t really care, I’ve gotten my opportunity, that’s the best part about it.”

A former first-round draft pick, has spent parts of seven seasons in Buffalo, three in Vancouver, three in Phoenix, two in Colorado, two with the Ducks, and one with the Maple Leafs.

May said that with all the skilled players in the NHL, he understands that it’s hard to find a roster spot.

“There’s so many great young players in the game coming up, you have to fight for your spot every year,” May said.  “But it was a strange summer not knowing what was going to happen, I haven’t been through that before, but it’s nice to be here.”
