Franzen\'s surgery is a success
DETROITJohan Franzen had successful anterior cruciate ligament surgery to repair a tear in his left knee this morning in Birmingham, Ala. The surgery was performed by orthopaedic surgeon Dr. William G. Clancy, one of the foremost authorities on knee ligament injuries and surgery.

Franzen was injured in the Red Wings’ 3-2 home-opening win over Chicago on Oct. 8. He scored the game-winning goal during the second period, apparently after he had already suffered the injuring during a pile-up of players along the boards in the same period. He had been matched on a line with Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom.

It’s believed that Franzen will be out for at least four months, which means he’ll also miss the Olympic Games with his native country, Sweden. The Games will be held in Vancouver in February.

Franzen's absence creates a huge hole in the Red Wings’ line-up.

”You don't lose a power forward who scores 35 goals and breaks Gordie Howe's playoff scoring record and think you're going to magically find another one and plop him in there," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told NHL.com. "It's going to put pressure on 18 other guys. Everyone's got to be 10-percent better. At the same time it opens up an opportunity for somebody else to step up."

Rookie forward Justin Abdelkader was called up from Grand Rapids of the AHL to fill the void.
