DETROIT — Even though he is on injured reserve, the Red Wings’ coaching staff appreciated Valtteri Filppula’s impressive month of October, and named him Carhartt’s “Hardest Working Player of the Month”.

The Finnish center recorded two goals and four assists in the opening month, before breaking his wrist on Oct. 29 in Edmonton.

Filppula stepped up his game in the wake of Johan Franzen’s knee injury, playing on the second line with Jason Williams and Ville Leino. Coach Mike Babcock praised his effort before the Wings’ game against Los Angeles on Oct. 15, saying “he’s been our best forward the whole way.”

Filppula received his award from Carhartt sponsorship and event specialist Sanja Zarubica during a pre-game ceremony prior to the start of the Wings-Bruins game at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday.

During the regular-season, Carhartt has presented the monthly award to the hardest working Red Wings’ player, along with Carhartt merchandise. The award, in its third season, recognizes the player for his hard work and individual dedication to commitment necessary to excel on the ice. The Red Wings’ coaching staff and front office personnel select the monthly recipients.

Filppula’s broken right wrist is expected to keep him sidelined through late December.

The native Vantaa, Finland was a third round selection by the Red Wings in the 2002 NHL Draft. In five seasons, Filppula has 43 goals and 57 assists, along with 96 penalty minutes.

Last season, he posted a career-high 40 points (12 goals and 28 assists). Filppula had three goals and 13 assists in 23 postseason games last spring.

For over 115 years, Carhartt has manufactured premium workwear known for exceptional durability, comfort, quality of construction, and fit that you can feel in the fabrics and see in the performance. Established in 1889, Carhartt is family-owned and operated with over 4,000 employees dedicated to providing Best-in-Class apparel for the active worker.

Carhartt and the Red Wings would like to recognize Valtteri Filppula for his outstanding work and success during October and wish him continued success throughout the 2009-10 season.
