DETROIT — Prior to this season, goalie Jimmy Howard played in a total of nine NHL games for the Red Wings, while spending most of the past three seasons playing for the organization’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.

This season, Howard was expected to be the back-up to three-time Stanley Cup champion Chris Osgood. But as fate would have it, Howard has been used more frequently early on and his performance in November was recognized by the Red Wings’ coaching staff, who named him Carhartt’s “Hardest Working Player of the Month”.

The Syracuse, N.Y. native posted a 6-2-0 record with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in November. He’s the first Red Wings’ goalie to earn the award since Osgood in Nov. 2007.

With Osgood out of the line-up with the flu, Howard stepped up when he recorded three consecutive wins between Nov. 11-14 with wins over Columbus (9-1), Vancouver (3-1) and Anaheim (7-4).

He finished the month with a pair of wins over St. Louis (Nov. 28) and Dallas (Nov. 30).

Howard, 25, received his award from Carhartt sponsorship and event specialist Sanja Zarubica during a pre-game ceremony prior to the start of the Wings-Blues game at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.

During the regular-season, Carhartt has presented the monthly award to the hardest working Red Wings’ player, along with Carhartt merchandise. The award, in its third season, recognizes the player for his hard work and individual dedication to commitment necessary to excel on the ice. The Red Wings’ coaching staff and front office personnel select the monthly recipients.

Howard was a second-round selection by the Red Wings in the 2003 NHL Draft. In four seasons, he’s 9-10-1 with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.

In four seasons with the Griffins, he posted a 90-73-11 record, including his best statistical campaign – with a 2.54 GAA and .916 save percentage – last season.

For over 115 years, Carhartt has manufactured premium workwear known for exceptional durability, comfort, quality of construction, and fit that you can feel in the fabrics and see in the performance. Established in 1889, Carhartt is family-owned and operated with over 4,000 employees dedicated to providing Best-in-Class apparel for the active worker.

Carhartt and the Red Wings would like to recognize Jimmy Howard for his outstanding work and success during November and wish him continued success throughout the 2009-10 season.
