Breakdown: Blues-Wings

Dec. 9, 2009 at Joe Louis Arena

By Michael Caples  - Detroit Red Wings Staff Writer

The Red Wings had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the second period during a minute-long five-on-three power play. However, the Blues kept the Wings from finding the back of the net, both on the five-on-three, and the ensuing five-on-four. It was the best scoring chance of the night for the Wings.

You can't blame goalie Jimmy Howard for Wednesday's loss. The young netminder stopped 25 of the 26 shots that came his way, and the only goal he allowed was a one-timer from 15 feet. He stopped 17 shots in the second period alone, helping the Wings' defense kill off three penalties. Howard is making it difficult for coach Mike Babcock to make a change in net.

The Wings loved having Ty Conklin on their roster last year. But this year is a different story. The Blues' veteran shut out his former team, making 42 saves on the night. He frustrated the Wings throughout.

The Wings outshot the Blues, 13-4, in the first period, but still headed into the intermission down 1-0. They ended up outshooting the Blues, 42-26.

Forward Henrik Zetterberg was asked about his team's performance. Here's what he said:

"We weren't able to score goals. We had a few hit the post, we had a few chances on the power play, but we have to have goals."

A lack of opportunities wasn't the problem for the Wings' offense. Detroit had six power-play chances, and recorded 13 shots, but they couldn't beat Conklin.
