Lidstrom hits assist milestone
First period helper gives Wings' captain 800 career assists
"I’m proud of reaching 800 assists," Lidstrom said. "It was great to get it on a night where you’re winning too. I thought the team came out and played real hard in the first period, got a couple goals right off the bat, and that really helped set the tone in the game."
The Red Wings defeated the Predators, 5-2.
Lidstrom assisted on Tomas Holmstrom’s 17th goal of the season, giving the Wings a 2-0 lead at 14:00 of the opening period. His 800 assists in second among active NHL players, trailing only Boston’s Mark Recchi (916).
Lidstrom, 39, became the first European defenseman – and eighth overall – to reach 1,000 points in his career, assisting on two goals in the Wings' 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
The six-time Norris Trophy winner is the 28th NHL player to reach the assist milestone, and the fourth in Red Wings’ history, joining Steve Yzerman (1,063), Gordie Howe (1,049) and Alex Delvecchio (825).
He now has 1,035 career points, which makes him the all-time leading scorer among all active NHL defensemen.
