Howard named Second Star of week
Howard posted a 4-0-0 record with a 1.22 goals-against average, .958 save percentage and one shutout as the Red Wings climbed to sixth place in the Western Conference standings with a 39-23-13.
Howard recorded 26 saves in a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last Monday, turned aside 30 shots in a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues last Wednesday, and blocked 25 shots in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild last Friday.
He closed the week by stopping all 33 shots in regulation and overtime plus 10-of-11 shootout attempts in a 1-0 victory at Nashville on Saturday.
Howard improved to 32-15-9 with a 2.24 goals-against average, .926 save percentage and two shutouts in 57 games, becoming just the fourth rookie in Red Wings' history to post 30 wins in his rookie season (Terry Sawchuk, Roger Crozier, Glenn Hall). He has started 22 consecutive games, the longest streak by a Red Wings goalie since Tim Cheveldae in 1991-92 and tops by a Detroit rookie since Roy Edwards in 1967-68.
Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott was named First Star of the week, while New Jersey left wing Ilya Kovalchuk was the Third Star.
