Devellano, Ciccarelli headed to HOF
DETROIT – For the third straight year, the Red Wings’ organization has reason to celebrate the annual Hockey Hall of Fame inductions.

In November, senior vice president Jimmy Devellano and former player Dino Ciccarelli will be enshrined during an induction ceremony in Toronto.

Devellano and Ciccarelli will join Igor Larionov (Class of 2008) and Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille (2009), recent Red Wings to join the Hall. This year’s ceremony will be held on Nov. 8.

Devallano, 67, is widely regarded as the architect of the Red Wings last four Stanley Cup championships. He was the first person hired by Mike and Marian Ilitch once they purchased the club from the Norris family in 1982. Devellano will enter the Hall in the Builder Category.

“I’d like to thank the selection committee for naming me,” Devellano said in a statement. “This game is all about the people, and since Lynn Patrick gave me my first break I’ve been fortunate to be associated with great people.”

Devellano was one of the first NHL general managers to assemble a strong European scouting staff back. His progressive moves have produced several Red Wings standouts, including Russians Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Pavel Datsyuk, and Swedish stars Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall.

Devellano is the proud owner of 14 championships rings, including seven Stanley Cup rings – three with the New York Islanders.

Ciccarelli, 50, played four of his 19 NHL seasons with the Red Wings, who acquired him in a trade with Washington for forward Kevin Miller.

“This is a tremendous honor that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Ciccarelli said in a statement. “I really appreciate the support of my coaches, the fans and most importantly my family.”

Ciccarelli began his NHL career as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota North Stars in 1980. He finished his career with 1,200 points with five different teams, including Washington, Tampa Bay and Florida.

Ciccarelli’s second season with the Red Wings – 1993-94 – was a huge milestone year for the Sarnia, Ontario, native, who reached 500 goals and 1,000 points in a two-month span.

He became the 19th NHL player to score 500 goals when he scored on Los Angeles’ Kelly Hrudey in a 6-3 Wings’ win on Jan. 8, 1994. On March 9, Ciccarelli was the 40th NHL player to reach 1,000-points when he scored for the Red Wings in a 5-1 victory over Calgary.

Ciccarelli finished with 608 goals and 592 assists in 1,232 NHL games.

The Hall of Fame also announced on Tuesday that joining Devellano and Ciccarelli will be female players Cammi Granato and Angela James, as well as the late Calgary Flames founding owner Daryl Seaman.
