Giving back is a huge focus for Modano
DETROIT – Mike Modano brings more than his goal-scoring abilities to Hockeytown.

The newest Red Wing used the fame and fortune he earned with the Dallas Stars’ organization to help the less fortunate. Through The Mike Modano Foundation, the NHL’s highest scoring American-born player has worked to help under-privileged served children in the Dallas arena.

On his Web site (MikeModano.com), Modano discusses how blessed he was to have a loving and supportive family.

“Unfortunately, not every child has that kind of support system and solid home life,” Modano writes on his Web site. “I believe I have an obligation to share my good fortune and try to make a difference in the lives of others. As a public figure, I also have the rare opportunity to speak out and be heard. I’ve established The Mike Modano Foundation and have devoted my time, energy, and financial resources to telling others about the tragedy of child abuse.”

Modano’s foundation hosts an annual celebrity baseball game, the Reebok Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game, to raise money for numerous charities and the Heroes Foundation YOUniversity Program. Celebrities that have participated include football hall-of-famer Michael Irvin, Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

The Mike Modano Foundation teamed up with Jonathan’s Place, a “home-style” emergency shelter in Dallas for abused, abandoned, and neglected children, in 2003 to build the Mike Modano Cottage. The cottage, located on the campus of Jonathan’s Place, provides shelter and an education center for victims of child abuse.

Following his press conference Friday at Joe Louis Arena, Modano said that his foundation will continue serving people in Dallas, and once he settles in, he will see what he can do in Michigan.

“Some of the things we’ve done, some of the homes that we’ve built are there,” Modano said. “I just don’t have the time and things to kind of develop that sort of thing up here. But we’re involved in a lot of things, and we’ll see what comes up.”
