Maltby signed one-year deal
The 37-year-old veteran forward has played 908 regular-season games with the Red Wings and won four Stanley Cup championships. Maltby, who was an unrestricted free agent this summer, will likely have to clear waivers to be assigned to the club’s AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.
Maltby will head up to Traverse City, the site of the Red Wings’ four-day training camp next week in northern Michigan. While he’ll compete for a roster spot with the Wings, it’s more likely that he’ll being the upcoming season in Grand Rapids, which is about a three-hour drive from Detroit.
Hampered last season by an arthritic shoulder, which later he opted to have surgery on, Maltby was limited to six points in 52 games.
Maltby is the third veteran player over the last three seasons to accept a two-way contract offer from the Red Wings, joining enforcers Aaron Downey (2007-09) and Brad May (2009-10).
