DETROIT – Red Wings prospect Riley Sheahan, a sophomore forward at Notre Dame, is one of four U.S. college players to be invited to Canada’s World Junior selection camp, which will be held in Toronto between  Dec. 12-15.

Sheahan was the Red Wings’ first-round pick, No. 21 overall, in the 2010 NHL draft. The soon-to-be 19-year-old (his birthday is Dec. 7), has five assists through the first 15 games of the season for the Fighting Irish. Sheahan, and the other 38 invitees, are eligible to play in the IIHF World Junior Championships, which begin Dec. 26 in Buffalo and Niagara, N.Y.

The remaining players invited to the camp represent four different leagues: Western Hockey League (17), Ontario Hockey League (11), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (six) and the American Hockey League (one).

The other Division 1 college players joining Sheahan at the selection camp are Minnesota-Duluth defenseman Dylan Olsen (Chicago Blackhawks), Colorado College forward Jaden Schwartz (St. Louis), and Miami forward Reilly Smith (Dallas Stars).

Last season, Sheahan led all ND freshmen scorers with six goals and 11 assists in 37 games. He is the first player in ND history to be invited to Canada’s selection camp.

Prior to his arrival in South Bend, Indiana, Sheahan was a two-time most valuable player for the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. In two seasons with the Falcons, he compiled 49 goals with 85 assists in 85 games.
